"King of Clubs, Part 4" (くらぶのきんぐ④ Kurabu no Kingu ④?) is the first chapter of the 10th volume and the 36th chapter overall of the Alice in Borderland manga, written and illustrated by Haro Aso.

Overview[]

Summary[]

At Ryohei Arisu's Team Base, Kodai Tatta comes face-to-face with Ginji Kyuma, Goken Kanzaki, Sogo Shitara and Takumi Maki. Confused and unsure of their current strategy, Tatta points out that since he has contact with his Base, any opponent that enters a Battle with him will suffer a loss of 10,000 points and die. Even if all opponents attack at the same time, at least one player will die. Kyūma calmly responds to Tatta's theory by agreeing and highlighting the fact that Tatta will be the individual who determines the person that dies. The four opponents strike at the base at the same time and three successfully touch it without entering a Battle with Tatta. Shitara, the unluckiest of the four, is touched by Tatta and forced to enter into battle.

Falling below 0 points, Shitara resigns to his fate and tells Kyūma to not let his death be in vain. The blimp carrying the King of Clubs card releases the laser gun and shoots Shitara through his head. Arisu's group gathers at their Base to discuss the next step of action. In shock of the level of commitment the members of the opposing team had for the collectivistic goal and the true prowess of the King of Clubs, they begin to formulate their next best plan.

Confident that Kyūma's team will not repeat the same tactic again, due to the lack of sufficient players on their team rendering the tactic moot, Arisu proposes that the members individually disperse and gather all the remaining Items and ignore the Battle aspect completely. Despite having the least number of points, Yuzuha Usagi continues to search for items while Tatta stays behind as the goalkeeper due to a lack of confidence in him from his team.

Usagi tries to search for an Item to claim but runs into Kanzaki. His speed and agility combined with his skill in parkour allows him to catch up quickly to Usagi, engaging her in a Battle. With over 11,000 points in difference, Kanzaki easily wins and takes 500 points away. Meanwhile, Hikari Kuina attempts to run from Maki but hits a dead end. With no possible escape in sight, she decides to face him head on in a physical fight to ensure he does not leave unscathed. As she goes in for her first kick, she realises that Maki is a talented fighter and dodges her attack easily while hitting her squarely on the face. As the hit was considered a form of physical contact, Maki wins the Battle with his over 10,000 point lead, deducting another 500 points from Team Arisu.

Arisu notices the points lost and worries about his teammates. However, he feels a sense of relief when a container opens up and he rushes in to claim the item. Unfortunately, Kisaragi Uta stands in front of the item ready to claim it. Hearing Kyūma's voice from behind him, he realises he's fallen into a trap but it is too late. Uta claims the 3,000 points from the item, putting her in a transition state. Arisu is unable to engage anyone but Kyūma in a Battle. With more than twice the number of points Arisu has, Kyūma wins the Battle easily, obtaining an additional 500 points for his team. Completely thrown off, Arisu finally realises that there was in fact no one at Kyūma's team Base and that he was outsmarted by the King of Clubs. However, he manages to thank Kyūma for the advice that salvaged the relationship between him and Usagi.

Even though Niragi manages to find an item worth 1,500 points pulling up the losses of his ownn team, both Maki and Kanzaki managed to source items totalling up to the same number of points for their team. The difference between the teams continued to grow bigger.

Having mostly engaged in point exchanges, Arisu's team gathers back at their Base. Niragi excuses himself during the plan discussion in order to get some time alone to assess his physical situation. With the morphine wearing off, he is on a race against time to finish this game. A frustrated Arisu tries to formulate a plan. He realises that the best way to turn the tables and beat the game is to adopt the King of Club's mentality.
